Shot by Louis Feuillade in the streets of World War 1 Paris, the legendary crime serial Les Vampires was initially banned by the police for glorifying crime, but became a smash hit in cinemas across France on its release in 1916. The film's central figure is the irresistible Irma Vep, personified by actress Jeanne Roques, alias Musidora. Her seductive, emancipated character made her one of the earliest liberated screen women and gave rise to a new genre in film, The Vamp!
Jeanne of the Dark is Terre Thaemlitz and Marko Ciciliani's artistic investigation of the vamp, presenting a palette of imageries and stylistic and cultural references, spanning from gender issues around the bad/good girl syndrome, across eroticism and the heavy metal genre to cannibalism.
